Premiere Pro vs Final Cut Pro for longer projects

Premiere was never good at handling long projects. In Premiere 5.1, it would lose elements on the timeline on long projects. In Premiere 1.5, long projects would take forever to open and would crash on occasion. CS3 seems to be just as clumsy with long projects as 1.5. The fact is I use Premiere because it's the most user friendly editing program. However, Adobe has earned a long standing reputation in not quite meeting the standards of serious professional stability on long projects. As a rule of thumb, their first release of any new version of Premiere is always full of bugs and people should never touch their software until the fist patch comes along. Adobe marketing people are always earger to release software before it is ready and by the time their engineers release the right patches Adobe is already about to release a new version with yet new bugs. I can't blame you if you try other software. You may want to try Avid or Edius or Vegas and keep us updated.

I can edit long projects just fine with CS4. I could with Premiere Pro 1.0 as well.

From my experiences and verified by my dealer, it's not so much length as it is how many assets you have in the project. Ten clips edited together to run 3 hours shouldn't be a problem. But 1001 audio, video and graphic elements with typical effects & modifications assembled in layers over a 20 minute timeline is asking for trouble. If CS5 can finally solve that then Adobe's really on to something.

I agree somewhat. It takes longer to load the project when I have 40-50 video clips and 30-40 still images but it edits just fine. I can add multiple effects and get geat realtime playback even with native HDV. I can edit cuts only with native AVCHD with my system but the Core i7 will allow you to add effects to native AVCHD.
