Premiere Pro ? about monitoring audio via external speakers

1st of all hello everyone, I'm new to PP, moving over from FCP 7. Let me tell you a little bit about my setup so that hopefully you guys can help me figure my problem out.

1. I'm running CS5, soon Cs5.5 on my Mac Pro desk top. 2x2.66ghz dual core intel xeon
2. I have a dual monitor set up, 2Dell 22's with a client monitor or air monitor 32inch sony bravia {HDMI}
3.Matrox MXO2 I/O box fully updated.
4. logictech 500w 5.1 speaker set that I have connected to the desktop via optical wire output.
5.Caldigit raid drive 3TB
6. I've been on the line with Matrox and their tech support and that was a dead end.

That is pretty much all the main pieces. When I run FCP 7 I can hear my timeline or sequence via the ext 5.1 speakers, I can see the timelines output in the 32 inch client monitor and all is good.

On Premiere Pro I can see the sequence but I can't hear the sound. It comes through the 32inch monitor's built in speaker. I have been through just about every setting in the PP Preferences hardware tab and no change, it only plays through the client monitor. As soon as I log out of PP and go into FCP 7 I'm good, everything works as it should.

Any Ideas?

Are any of you running a similar setup?

How do you monitor your audio?

Are you guys using ext. speakers and if so, how have you connected them to your tower ?
{MAC PRO}

Thanks

That's a good question. My Mac Pro is attached to a Dangerous Mix Bus control which mixes it with the output of my MOTU 896HD FW sound modules so I am not sure where the audio is coming from. Given I do all my real audio work in ProTools/Digital Performer/Logic I never really paid attention to the audio. I have no answers, but given I am now probably switching over to Premiere for the time being, if you do get an answer, I want to know as well :) I've been thinking about picking up one of those Matrox boxes. I have a BlackMagic Intensity card, but I am not happy with it.

Hi Rick,

Yeah i haven't heard from anyone here as of yet as to how they have it set up but I can't figure out why it won't work with Premiere Pro. I use After FX and its coming through the speaker system just like FCP 7. Frankly now that I think about it its the only software that's not coming through.
I spoke to tech support at Matrox and they seem to think its a PP issue and not a Matrox issue.
I didn't believe them at 1st but I guess it is since no one has said otherwise.

Go figure!

Well given FCP7 and AE are working as you'd expect, I'd have to agree with Matrox on that. I'd say contacting Adobe would be my next step. I would imagine that it must be some kind of setting with the Audio Mapping preferences.

I'm going to have to check that Rick, FYI I will private message you a link to another forum where many of our issues are being addressed. GL with the switch, the good news is that PP appears to be pretty close to FCP so the learning curve won't be as bad as you may think. I was shocked at how many guys are switching but then again I shouldn't be.

Thanks! I'm not too worried. I have used Premiere a little and nothing was a glaring problem. I try to known how to use most applications so when I work with people using different ones, I don't have a learning curve. :)

On the audio settings click the AISO button. There should be in there settings for the audio channels you have available. Write back if that stuff is there and what options you have there.

Little disclaimer: I'm not sure if cs.5 has the aiso feature but in the older pp which I have I have to set my audio in there.

Can you try this? Choose Adobe Premiere Pro > Preferences > Audio Hardware and change your Default Device setting to System Default.
