premiere pro 2 and hvx

I am looking into upgrading to an hvx and a new editing machine with ppro2

I am not sure if ppro2 will edit all the formats from the hvx without third party software ex. dvc25,50, pro hd.

any help is appreciated.

Im using Raylight from DVfilm. It provides a very quick conversion, and it works great with every possible mode of the HVX. Its also very inexpensive in comparision to the alternative solutions at this time.

Another option that just came out is Serious Magic's DVXProHD Decoder. It converts MXF files to either AVI or Quicktime files. Unfortunately, I'm not there yet (HD, that is) so I can't comment on how any of the options work but I thought I'd mention it.

BTW, it's included in the new DV Rack 2.0 HD.

maaan................... I can't believe that you have to get a third party product to take your files off the p2 card into ppro2. this may just be the turning point to mac.

a lot of people in the industry use them and final cut and it supports p2 files natively.

g5 hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

FCP/Mac natively supports converting the P2 files. It doesn't actually support the files themselves natively. Some editors actually do support the files themselves natively (Avid and EDIUS Broadcast and Liquid but Liquid's only in standard-def).

Does it actually convert the files, or does it make a proxy type file like Raylight. for some reason or another, i was under the impression that it makes proxy files. although i havent used it yet so i really have no idea.

It makes new self-contained AVI files. You could delete the MXFs if you wanted.

Raylight's proxies allow it to have the three quality levels and realtime previews at lower quality levels. Serious Magic's is always 100% quality, no adjustability. So if you have a really fast system that's fine, but if you can't support realtime playback, Raylight's lower-res proxies can help you with a sort of offline/online kind of workflow.
