Premiere Pro 1.5 Capture Problem

I have Premiere Pro 1.5 on my pc and i'm using my friends Canon XL H1 for a project in school. We spent a lot of time filming today and now that i'm home and ready to capture it all i plug in the firewire and an add new hardware thing comes up on my screen. This seems pretty normal because i've never used the camera on this computer before, so i click ok and then it says it cannot install the new hardware for some reason. I don't really know what to do because i know its connected properly to the computer but it won't let me use it for some reason. Does anyone have any ideas?

So is windows saying this or is premiere having an issue? I assuming windows.

I can't recall if the Canon XL has special drivers, but..it might be worth while to check the canon support site.

I thought all firewire would be the same as well, that was until I I tried to hook up a Nikon D1X through firewire. I had to get the drivers from Nikon.

According to the Canon Website:
XL H1
Firewire: No driver required.
Additional third-party software required to import HD video.

What OS are you using? Are you importing HD?

Screen shot would bee good. :)

I messed with it some more last night and realized some footage i shot that wasnt in HD worked fine. But it looks like premiere was having the problem because when i switched to the not HD footage it worked fine. I guess i would need to buy some other program thats like 700 dollars to use HD in Premiere which doesn't seem worth it seeing as i don't even own the camera. I'm bummed out though because I shot a good deal of footage and now I can't use any of it thats in HD.

That's not all together true. You could do a couple of things, upgrade to PPro2.0 and edit HDV natively [I would recommend the upgrade but not editing HDV natively]

OR you can purchase AspectHD for around $500 [which you have already said you didn't want to do]

Or better yet you can upgrade your Premiere 1.5 to 1.5.1 which includes a limted version of AspectHD the upgrade should be free!
