when it comes to edit avchd footage is it better to do in premiere or fcp as far as handling... I heard premiere can't really handle avchd footage and fcp can handling pretty good but their software and computer are so f.....k exp
CS4 is buggy for me to edit natively... but the workaround for me has been the AVCHD to DVCProHD transcoder, at least until Cineform ProspectHD v4 is released. Some people aren't having issues at all with CS4 and AVCHD, but a lot are. FCP can't edit AVCHD natively at all, you have to transcode it to ProRes422.
Beyond that, it's just a matter of which program/OS you prefer.
I have no problems editing AVCHD natively in CS4 (or CS3 for that matter with the Main Concept Mpeg Pro HD plug-in). I prefer it over the FCP workflow (which I do use on my MBP for same day edits on remote jobs). As Mr. Harvey said, FCP doesn't actually 'handle' AVCHD at all, it transcodes it to ProRes first and then you edit the ProRes. One of the biggest strong points of Premiere is its ability to natively edit so many formats; you can really take it for granted if you're use to it, that is until you're forced into another workflow that requires transcoding on import.
Try edius. In my opinion, with my own experience using it, it's the under-dog that kicks both FCP and Premiere Pro CS4's butts.
Example: Color correction/grading
Edius 5 - still plays normally with unrendered clip.
PP CS4 - Stuttering like crazy without rendering. Sometimes, even
rendered clips are not playing right.
I like Premiere's layout the most but that hardly matters when you can't get your works done smoothly.
I love fcp and apple computer is like a luxury sport car, but cost too much and it doesn't work well with after effect..
I haven't try pp and hate the pc, infected with STD too much... but i like the work around pp and ae

you should be fine on that gateway but just so you know premiere cs4 is available for apples computers now. and works beautifully with AE and any other adobe program for that matter!
