Premiere hdv captures are not as good as some other "capturing machies" ?

I've recently started to edit a project shot on the JCV gy-hd 201 hdv. I use Premiere Pro.
The producer told me that Premiere's acquisitions form the tapes are not as good as those form some "professional" capturing machine he knows are used in "real cinema".
Since he aims to screen the project in cinemas, he asked me to do the cutting im Premiere and generate a cut list for him to re-capture everything fromn the 20 tapes of shot material with those "better and expensive captuting machines".
is what this producer told me real?

Maybe he was actually referring to the logging process itself and perhaps has used something that logs the clips in a way he finds more appealing. I'd ask for clarification.

Maybe, but if he's looking to re-capture, probably not. He's off his nut. He's going to get all the same 1s and 0s whatever other device he uses.

I would also ask for clarification and then also ask "what is the "professional capturing machine".

About the only real difference a "professional" capturing machine can make is better error correction of the signal. It might prevent a dropout when reading the tape., but it won't affect the image quality in any way. If you have a problem free capture with your setup, then nothing he can do will improve it in any way.

Ok and thanks!
I simply captured the clips we needed (evertything, indeed) trough the camera itself and a nice firewire cable. And, of course, Premiere Pro.

About the "better error correction of the signal"... Well I've obtained no drops or missing frames, so, shoudl I be happy? I Mean: the signal orrections only affects drops and missing frames, or could give an overall better quality? Aren't we talking about digital signal and the good old list of 1 and 0?

If you get all the 1s and 0s (and if you have no dropouts, you do), you've got everything there is to get. There is nothing which will make it better.

It's exactly like any other computer file. It is what it is, and you either have it or you don't.

The only other thing he could possibly be talking about is going through SDI or component and using a capture board, but that's not capturing HDV as HDV. That's an on-the-fly transcoding of a signal to something else. If he wants HDV, you've already got the best you're going to get.

Nothing better than having a client that doesn't know what he is talking about... tell you how to do your job.:cheesy:
Tell him movies (or segments of movies) on the big screen are edited on premiere pro all the time.
I think what really matter are the tools, in the NLE, which sweeten the audio and video.
