Hi
I edit on a Macbook Pro 15" (2007, Core 2 Duo 2,4Ghz) with 2Gb of RAM.
Which kind of improvement if I upgrade to 4 or 6GB of RAM?
In italy 2x2Gb = 45 euro, 2+4Gb =180 euro.
Is it worth?
Thank you
Premiere Pro loves ram. We tried running in 4GB and gave up. I would say 8GB minimum and really 12GB preferred minimum.
I'm sorry to say this, but Premiere Pro is never going to be snappy on a core 2 duo MBP. We've just put ours on ebay.
Also, be careful with you MBP, check that it can actually use 4GB. The earlier models could only use 3GB max and yours sound to be that sort of age. Don't assume it can take more, only to find you wasted your money!!!!
I'm not a Mac guy but if your MacOS is 32-buit, you won't be able to use more than 3-4GB....Also, CS5/5.5 are 64-but only. I'd dump the MBP and get a Windows 7 desktop personally.
Just wanted to clarify the mac/windows confusion:
Mac OS's can run in 32 or 64 bit mode, it doesn't really make a difference either way. Even in 32bit mode, the OS can access all the RAM of a 64bit OS, and it can run 64bit code all the same. In short: you don't need to worry about the 32 vs 64 issues of the Windows platform.
The problem here is that your CPU only has 2 cores. In generally you want to give each core in your computer 1.5-2GB of RAM. Anything more is overkill. This is why getting more than 4GB of RAM for your core2duo computer is not going to help you.
Thanks for your answers
One more question: I have tryed FCPX on my Macbook Pro.
Compared to PPRO CS5.5 is MUCH FASTER.
Much much faster.
The clips playback on the timeline (canon 7d file) is much smoother.
What do you think about this ?
Thank you.
FCP-X and Premiere Pro are completely different products. FCP-X is leveraging the GPU in your Mac Book Pro, Premiere Pro isn't, because it only leverages NVIDIA GPUs.
In terms of RAM per core, I'd agree under normal circumstances, but you aren't taking in to account how Premiere Pro caches the media it has open. Seriously, Premiere Pro easily uses the 16GB of ram we have installed and often I'd like more. Now think what will happen when you take 12GB of that out.... and what you get is a seriously sluggish machine that is constantly swapping RAM out to the hard disk instead of letting you scrub or edit.
Unless you are using tiny projects, Premiere Pro and 4GB of ram will always be really sluggish. Add to that, Core 2 Duo is not fast enough for it and the hard disk is going to choke, your MBP and Premiere Pro were not made for each other. It may not be what you want to hear, but that's how it is.
