Premiere blew FCP official out of the water

Dark Side of the Camera
I wonder why there is almost no information on the Premiere vs FCP shootout LAPPG did last Wednesday?

Premiere Pro vs. Final Cut Pro Shoot Out!

We are pleased to welcome back Adobe for an exciting first ever, one-of-a-kind event for the LAPPG: a Premiere Pro vs. Final Cut Pro Shoot Out! This side by side comparison is an amazing opportunity to see with your own eyes how Premiere Pro measures up first hand!

We'll begin the evening with Adobe's Karl Soule who will show us exciting new features of CS5 Production Premium. Then he'll put on his "game face" and represent Team Premiere Pro as we put him head to head against one of our skilled LAPPG editor members, Stuart Ferreyra, of TImecode Multimedia, who will represent Team Final Cut Pro.

From the snippets and bits of information I could find, Premiere CS5 blew FCP officially out of the water. And we seem to talk NOT about 30 seconds faster or something like that.

Here is a Twitter comment from KarlSoule:

..I finished rendering my final output while the FCP system was still ingesting footage!

But in the moment it´s surprisingly hard to get any facts.

Anyone?

Here we go:

This is the first Premiere Pro vs Final Cut Pro shootout held at the LA Post Production Group Meetup ( LAPPG.com ).
The contestants were given 9 tasks to complete in 15 min. Premiere Pro CS5 was completed long before Final Cut Pro. Enjoy

Good information. It's very difficult to break Post-Production from the mindset that editing is Final Cut or nothing.

We use Premiere Pro on our main editors at Volition-Inc because of the low cost, fast ouput it offers.

If NLE's could just get their compression ducks in order, or if Premiere Pro had color management (like After Effects) it would really be a world class complete editing solution.

Maybe we'll get some of those features in CS6.

Took a while to brake them from AVID also - just a matter of time.
FCP is loosing ground fast in this days.
More and more editors I know switching now - at least here in Europe.

Just get Colorista II - at least as good as Color if not better in some features.

Works like a charm, works inside of Premiere and pretty fast, even with masks and complicated keying.

Frank

P.S. Just reread your post - color management - yeah.
Premiere handles everything in 36bit floatingpoint now - converting on the fly as you edit - the user doesn't even notice.

I think it is too early in the game to make this test. Anyone who knows anything about FCP knows that the last release (v7) was a 'pulled punch'.

The last release came out before Snow Leopard and IMO it only came out because there hadn't been an update for a year since v6.
Remember CS5 only just came out.

I'm expecting the next FCP to be a rebuilt rocket ship because I might be switching to premier if it isn't.

I always been a premiere guy. I always looked smthng easy to go, cause i'm not a pro editor. But i was very fed up with premiere especially cs4! I never trusted premiere's export quality, till i see cs5 with a cuda card on one of fellas pc. And now i know after cs5 there is no way back for adobe, final cut became industry choice, even the both NLE's working style looks same but i'm still wanna hear from someone who finished proper feature on cs5.

I just did "Der falsche Mann" 90 minutes, 25p 1080, over 5000 clips of footage in the bins, over 600 in the timeline. Footage was a mix of DVCproHD, uncompressed HD, and MOV files from a D5.

Fast, snappy, stable, rock solid (thou some of the Quicktime files that came of a Firestore caused some problems here and there).

During more than 200 hrs of editing I had 3 or 4 crashes without any loss of data or work (I hit the contr. S - combination pretty often).

I don´t care what "the industry" thinks - I use what works, best bang for the buck.
If that "industry" has enough money to waste time on rendering and transcoding, fine - I don't have that money and need to be much faster than the industry.
And since CS5 is totally compatible with FCP and they can exchange projects and timelines via XML export - I even can collaborate with anyone who uses FCP.

Franck;

Did this system was on Mac or Pc, and with CUDA or without?

thanks in advance

Im glad they did this. I want a clear message to apple, improve it. I have CS5 but Im only using AE and PS .... now.

I think it is good that it happened and like Noel it is a clear message to Apple ... shape up or ship out.

Right now the best reason to buy FCP is COLOR ... makes it worth its price tag but gamma needs to be standardized.

@postmaster. It's not a competition dude! Whatever works the best.

A lot of rumors about Apple abondening the pro market, at the same time Steve Jobs is posting "the new FC will be awesome".
I just changed part of my projects to h264 aquisition (550D) and have to say if FCP will not speed up the ingest/conversion/editing process of h264 and other formats, many editors will look into PP CS4...

Even if I was cs5 ppro I would still transcode dslr capture for jobs that I cared about – personal preference, I like editing with iframe codecs.

It's hard to tell if apple is abandoning the pro market. But adobe are looming very very large.

Even though I've been using premiere for a long time I recently had to do some color correction to a Red project in FCP 7 using COLOR. I was very impressed by both COLOR and the workflow.

I agree. I'm not a fan of the Premiere interface at all but the new enhancements in CS5, the interaction with other applications in the Production Premium Suite and the release of Colorista II have forced me to take a long hard look at Adobe again. Right now it's seems hard to beat.

I left Premiere long ago for Sony Vegas. (I know.. I know...) Recently moved to Avid MC5. Given my choice of Avid or CS5, I'd still choose the same way, but CS5 is making terrific inroads and I say good for them. I hope Colorista comes to Avid because I am loving MB Looks even with it's shortcomings.

Apple have left themselves a mountain to climb, and their rather lackluster hardware releases aren't endearing them to many right now either. I have no idea where that company is headed in terms of pro editing, but I am very glad I am on PC right now.

Lightworks is also in the background for this fall/winter. Between that, Edius, CS5, and Avid, PC editors are really spoiled for choice.
