Premiere and Raylight

I just moved back to Premiere from FCP and just bought Raylight a couple nights ago.

When I am importing mfx files, I am only getting two streams of audio instead of the 4 it copies - which often means I am getting no sound, if I was only using two of the channels on the camera.

I know the audio is there, because if I transfer the audio mxf's to wav, I see 4 channels of audio, and I can place them together within the timeline by hand - but that process takes forever of course... I've downloaded the matrox codecs as well.

Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Raylight normally imports only channels 1 and 2, so set up to record 1,2 on your external mics or 1,2 with the internal mics, whichever you are using, using the switch settings on the camera (page 52 in the manual).

thanks,

So the only way to import all 4 channel is to import each audio by hand then link them up in PP 2.0?

You would have to import 3 and 4 by hand. Can I ask why you need to import 4 channels?

Quite often I have two external mics, such as boom and lav, or multiple lavs. usually plugging one into channel 1 and 1 into channel 2... The HVX splits the 2 channels into 4 seperate channels through mxf... Basically it's right ear and left ear for both channels.

So when I import into PP 2.0, It looks like I am getting R and L from channel 1, and nothing from channel 2 unless I import them by hand.

Meaning if I have 1 guy laved on channel 1 and another on channel 2, I only get the two streams of audio from channel 1, and the other guy is silent.

As I said early, I have just moved from FCP, where I don't have this problem, because I get all 4 channels on seperate streams in that NLE. So I figured I was doing something wrong.

Not quite. The HVX doesn't split it up, it actually records four separate channels. Two come from the XLRs, and the other two come from the onboard microphone.

Well now I am thouroughly confused...

So say I set channel 1 to a boom, and channel 2 to a lav.

are you saying the 4 lines of audio I get will be Channel 1 boom, channel 2 lav, and the 2 others from the onboard mic?

And then, if you know raylight, which two channels are raylight importing? I've been processing a lot of my old footage as stand alone files, just to have them that way, and unless I import all 4 channels into the timeline by hand, a ton of my footage has no sound.

Does this mean it is not importing the sound from the internal mic, and will only import sound from the XLR channels?

Exactly.

Yes. The other two channels are still there on the card and you can extract them manually, but Raylight doesn't do it automatically (unless Marcus has performed some new feat of wizardry I'm not aware of yet).
