Premiere 2.0?

Hi all,

I just found a great deal on Premiere 2.0. Right now all I have is windows movie maker and would like to upgrade to non linear. I don't have the budget for any of the most recent software nor do I have the most recent computer system to run those programs (cs4). My computer can handle 2.0, but i was wondering if this was a wise choice to buy. Is it outdated, not compatible any more, etc? I don't need the most cutting edge just something to get started. Would this be a wise choice or a waste of money.

I also found premiere pro CS3 for just a little more. I would need to make a couple upgrades to my computer to run this, but i need to do that anyway. What do you think, is it worth it to go CS3 over 2.0?

Thanks

2.0 is a good choice, CS3 doesn't really offer much more in the way of important features and certainly nothing that would be a deal breaker.

If it's really only a little more, and you are planning to make the upgrades anyway, then I'd go with CS3, especially if you have any aspirations toward P2.

PP 2.0...still using it

as my primary system. I've grown pretty accustomed to it and don't have the need (or the $$) to upgrade just yet. Besides, I've read that CS3 doesn't offer much improvement, and it seems that CS4 has been plagued with problems for many, though not all.
I would warn that you should probably have more than the minimum system requirements to get it to work at any decent speed.
Be aware that it doesn't handle HD well. (I bought Aspect HD at the same time I bought CS2, and since then I beleieve CF has dropped support for Aspect. (Now, I feel as if I'm stuck in a place I didn't want to be, and the only way out is to spend, spend, spend).
If you''re not working in HD, you should be fine w/CS2 if it's a legitimate copy.

good luck.

Well, that's true of pretty much any software.

Cineform doesn't work too well for some reason, but regular HDV is fine. I get very good performance out of CS3.

I thought Premiere had really shaped up since version 2.0 into a good NLE, although Adobe really needs to stop adding fancy new features and interface change every version and just concentrate on fixing bugs that have been around since version 7.0. Last I checked CS4 still have the "Error Compiling Movie" problem, along with the memory leaks for larger projects.

I'll second that it handles HDV fine. The biggest problem you are likely to run into is newer camera support. Cuts and transitions are the same regardless of what program you use. The newer versions might have a few more tools and filters, but the core is what you need, not the fluff.

I've been running PP 2.0 for the last 3-4 years with no issues whatsoever.

I don't really see the need to upgrade to 3 or 4 as I don't work with a P2 workflow. HD & premeire 2.0 are fine (as long as you have the system for it).

I do my 30 sec. TV Ads all the time with it, then output back to tape & transfer to BetaSP. I've cut 5 hour weddings on it, output to Encore for authoring as well as running After Effects 7.0 Pro at the same time with not even so much as a 5 second hang.

If you just want to cut a movie, PP 2.0 is plenty & will do the job for you no probs. with DV-HD may bog down a bit depending on your specs.

P.S.

Movie Maker is also an NLE

I say, if you get a great price on 2.0, it won't let you down.

2.4 Ghz Core 2 Quad 6600
3x320 HD
4G Ram
NVIDIA 8600 1G Ram
Win XP Pro 32Bit

Have fun & good luck

I would also say run with Pro2 i have also used it for the last 4 years and very happy it is stable and works very well with a slow machine like the the first lg775 3 gig pres i still use it for some projects this days,Though i have have moved over to using Edius from Canopus . There is only two things i would have like to seen improved on it was the DVD side with a few more features and having time ramp.

Now if Adobe would just sort out them damn bugs in CS4, somhow i cannot understand that the beta tester cannot fine the problems that so many users fine after release. It would be nice that Adobe have a list of hardware that the beta tester used that work , not for us to go feeling around in the dark. at least Canopus has a list of MotherBoards up on there web sight and a part of the users forum is just dedicated to hardware.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I think I am going to stick with 2.0 (on a budget). Right now I probably won't be using P2 for a while and at the moment am not doing anything in HD. Quick question though: With the magic bullet software that I got with my DVX100B, it has Instant HD 1.1, will that work okay on 2.0 to turn SD into HD?
