Premier vs Avid on PC laptop

Hello all.

I guess this may be a very vague question but.....

I would like to start doing "light" editing on my IBM thinkpad but I'm unsure whether to buy Avid or Premier?

Most of my work is in news and documentary. I shoot with a HVX to P2 cards in 720 30p.

My laptop is a T60 2.0Ghz Core2 Duo with 2g of ram and a ATI video card. I plan to use an external hardrive for a scratch disk.

And to make things more complicated my editor is using FCP so it would be nice if I could send him files?

Thank You

Kris

I have Avid, Premiere, and Edius Broadcast.
In order of preference I would have to say Broadcast, Premiere CS3, then Avid.

Edius because you can through anything at it. Then Premiere now that it has become "P2 Aware" with the latest patch. Avid was one of the first out of the shoot for P2 but lags behind pretty much everyone else in continuing development.

Really depends on your preference (and pocketbook).

If your editor uses FCP you might consider just sending him raw files and guidence (regarding what you're hoping for). While people do transfers all the time I would suggest you stay away from the potential issues if you operate under realistic time constraints. (or just get a MAC and FCP yourself for your rough cuts).

I'd vote for Premiere over Avid, unless you have some compelling reason to need Avid. Premiere comes in the CS3 suite which includes some awesome software like After Effects, OnLocation, and PhotoShop, as well as audio and DVD authoring apps.

Like DRegenthal, I'd vote for EDIUS first, Premiere Pro CS3 second, and Avid last.

I cant afford the full retail version so I have to buy academic. Do I still get the extra software from Adobie?

I know nothing about EDIUS. Why Is it so good?
