Premier doesn't like Camstudio

Hi

I'm trying to record screen usages to video footage with the Free software package Camstudio.

This seems to work and record fine - and the result can be played back with Media Player etc.

The problem is when I import that footage into Premier to use it in my project it Premier doesn't play the video correctly it looks very blurred.

I've tried using Interpret footage to change the way it's handled but nothing works.

Any ideas anyone?

No - Camstudio has it's own settings and I want the output in a PAL 25fps project.

That's likely why you're getting the behaviour

Your sequence settings should match the import footage specs. Your export settings should match whatever your target format is

For example if the fps doesn't match, premiere will blend the frames to match and you will get a blurry mess. If you disable clip blend, it will duplicate frames to match and you will get judder

What format did you record (resolution, fps)? , and what is your intended output format (you said PAL, 25fps, but did you mean PAL DVD?)

Yes, I'm sure you're right.

I just want some software that will create PAL AVI and then Premier will be OK with it.

I've just tried After Effects but even though the output from AE looks OK, Premier just blurs it when it's used in a project.

Looks like I will have to actually video the screen.

Thanks for your help.

just set the capture format to 25fps , you can adjust the settings in camstudio recording settings. you can also set the resolution. If your settings match, then premiere "will be ok with it"

in AE, when you drop footage into the make comp button , it will make it the same specs as the input footage. e.g. if it was 30fps, it will make a 30fps comp with the same dimensions - that's likely why you're getting decent output in AE, but not Premiere

I've done that. I set the frame rate to 25fps - can't see where to set resolution other than selecting the area you are recording.

But no joy.

The Microsoft codec in camstudio just makes the screen flash in Premier the Cinepak codec doesn't do that but is still blured.

What format are you recording? camrec or a different compression setting? e.g. huffyuv ? If you were using cinepak or microsoft - those are garbage.

For lossless, I would recommend huffyuv; it doesn't come with windows, it's 3rd party but free. You need lots of HDD space

My copy of camstudio only has Microsoft, Cinepak and then intel IYUV (twice).

Is there a new version then? Might be worth downloading that if there is?

camstudio can access any vfw codecs (vfw are AVI type codecs , vfw = video for windows) , it's an old system but still used on windows. These are system dependent - either you have it installed or not - and can vary across computers (none are bundled with default windows installations except the few that you mentioned)

Some examples of vfw type codecs are huffyuv, xvid, divx, most DV-AVI codecs, etc....

I suggested huffyuv because it's lossless, and has low latency. Lagarith is lossless as well, and has better compression, but very slow to encode and decode.

If you download and install huffyuv, it will be accessible from camstudio (and in premiere or any other programs that rely on vfw system)

You need a decent system and storage transfer speeds, otherwise you may get framedrops
