Preamp for 4073a Mic?

G'day all,
I've got a nice 4073a atop my dvx-100a and noticed how much better it sounds when she is on a boom pole - duh! I now believe that the sound/boom person needs to be able to monitor the audio hence the need for some kind of preamp - double duh! What do you recommend? I see a Sure FP24 $$$$$ mentioned and then a Sound-device MM-1 (seems more in my price range) I don't want to downgrade the nice sound of the Mic but a long headphone extension cord from the camera to sound person seems cumberson. I am mainly looking at documentary type stuff and the XLR cable will be going directly in the DVX100 not into a sound recording device (haven't even thought about that and having to sync sound seems like too much work) .

On another note, I just discovered the low pass filter on the Mic! Perhaps now I'll be rid of those low frequency rumbles when shooting outside near traffic ??

I had an mm-1 and that's a nice way to give a boom-op full control of one mic, plus it let's you talk to the boom op independently (if you get a $30 pair of walkie-talkies... or run a wire to him). It's a cool feature if you can use it...

If you have to go new the there's no beating the value of the mm-1, but if you can find a used FP-24 or Mixpre then you'll be ready for a second mic and mixing signals... it just depends on your luck. I bought a used FP-24 for around $400 and it looks okay, but visibly used. (I was fortunate that my ebay bid to $500 wasn't pushed up by other bidders!)

Since then I've seen one good/new condition FP-24 go for closer to $500... which I told a fellow forum member about and he quickly snatched it up.

If you watch ebay you can occasionally find some decent deals... by next spring I'm going to get what I have in my FP-24 and go with a 302.

The gist is that if you've got $400 to spend you can watch ebay for weeks and eventually luck out (maybe)... or else the mm-1 will do everything you could ever need to do with one mic... and they're $349 brand new.
