pre-sales vs possible distr. deal

Ive seen alot that film makers using things like kickstarter or even presales to recoup costs... How would this affect a future deal with say a dvd distr. or cable... I know that they like the " exclusive"...

just licensed two features on a five year term to a distributor and they said as long as I'm not competing with them (remember, they sell dvds wholesale to retailers and e-tailers, not direct to audience) they had no problem with me buying discs from them at wholesale and selling them from my web site or even making my own DVD to sell from my web site. that's anecdotal and i don't know if it carries over for other distributers but it's what i've come across.
