Pre-Render Question

What happens if I skip the Pre-Render step and just go directly to rendering my timeline for DVD (mpg2-two pass). Is pre-rendering a neccessary step? I've done it before without pre-rendering and I don't notice a difference but then again, I wasn't looking specifically for anything. I read in the Vegas manual that you should pre-render before you render out (hence 'pre'-render). What's the purpose of this step?
PS- I always pre-render with 2-3-3-2.
