An upcoming short film project i'm working on involves snow. While it not essential to the story itself, it is essential in creating the mood we are going for.
Big problem is, the area of the country we are in (Southeast) does not reliably get snow every year. We are looking at shooting in other states, but obviously this will greatly increase our production cost.
I am wondering what the practicality of using a snow machine would be. The story is set in the middle of the woods, with the majority of the snow scene being at night (though it would be great to have it in daytime as well for establishing shots).
My main concerns are:
-Having enough snow that we will be able to get some wide shots, and not be forced in tight shots to hide the lack of much snow.
-A few shots will require closeup of feet in the snow, so getting the visual "crunch" of the footprints being made is key.
Is this a reasonable idea to pull off with a snow machine? Is there a way I can determine the cost of creating the snow per square foot of the area we need?
