practical or green screen?

I have a scene to shoot where a character lies in a bed of flowers. I live in LA and i have yet to find a massive amount flowers where my actress could lie in. I am thinking about shooting her lying on a green screen but dont know if it will look too fake. I dont have experience with green screen. Can someone provide me some info.

thanks

the problem about having her lie on a green screen would be that the green would reflect on her too much. and you would have a problem pulling a good key. so you can hang her from wires but now it just got super complicated.

you can also get some sort of transparent blowup bed, put it on some sort of net below it and hang it like a hammock. then put lights below the bed. (fluorescent so they don't get too hot an burn the plastic.) and a translucent silky sheet above. Then you can pull a luma key (deals with brightness rather than color) at leas this way you wont have to deal with green or blue spilling on the edges.

Thats the best I can think of. good luck.

1: find a friends house
2: go to a gardening center
3: take potted flowers out of pots and arrange them in grass
4: lay the actress in flowers

I say a combination, actually. Fill a small (slightly-larger-than-actress-sized) patch of the frame with actual flowers. There's no way you'll be able to cost-effectively fake the interaction between her and these physical flowers digitally, anyway. So build that part practically, put her in it, and do the scene. Then, in post, do a set extension and digitally expand the area around her with CG or cloned flowers to get that extensive look you want.

I once had to do a photo shoot with a couple bodypainted, one silver one gold. Lying on a bed if daisies. we bought about $80 worth of cut daisies and then piled them around them.

You don't need a huge field, just body-sized right? Fake it by using stock footage of a field full of flowers and then show close ups of a smaller area. I'm sure there is a 6' x 6' section of flowers in a 1-hour driving radius of LA.

i agree with dougspice. Also know that his solution wouldn't necessarily need a green screen. If you've never done a matte (chroma key or garbage matte) I wouldn't suggest it without first TESTING it with your software to make sure you know what you're doing.

I wouldn't use a green screen because the flowers will not be real so if your actress moves (even slightly) you will be able to tell it's fake by the way the flowers are always static. I too like dougspice's idea if you can get it to work but if you find a place where you can get the amount of flowers you want for less than $100 it will be way worth it considering the time it would take with all the technology (not to mention the headaches) Hope I helped and good luck!

Only problem we have encountered is that the LED lightring of course throws the green light also on the foreground, so to adjust its intensity correctly you should have the reflecmedia SOFTWARE on set and test the key (pulling a key without their software is even harder, must mention that I used the system several times two years ago, but only with DV footage, so not really ideal conditions...)
That aside, dougspice solution is spot-on...
