I just noted this image from whiplash - a film Im not specifically looking to analyse.

Check the practical and the patch it is casting on the floor.

1) Im suprisied at the fact that I beleived this light for a moment! Its ridiculous!

2) do you think there is a spot up above out of shot or is there one hidden in the practical.. I think hidden up high?

or is the effect just real?

More examples?

In terms of camera and DR control its just so much easier to have a low lumen practical and the beam brightness controlled an out of frame dimable movie light

That effect would be easy enough to do with a narrow PAR bulb or an M16 or equivalent. But if those any of those were installed into those fixtures, they would not produce that even a spread and would also appear hotter to camera. So I'd guess a low wattage E26 bulb in the fixture and higher mounted lamps alternating with the practicals.

Yep Im sure its spots up out of shot.

DO you have comments one you own use of practicals mixed with out of frame move lights?
