PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

I just got my tape stock from EVS. I ordered two boxes of DVM63MQ and DVM63PQ.

I'm not sure which tape I should use to shoot my short film on; the MQ or the PQ?

Instincts tell me to shoot on PQ and then "master" the final footage onto the MQ tape. Just wanted to get some feedback.

I also ordered a DVMCLA digital video head cleaner. For the 15 or so hours off the 17 hours I've shot footage, I've been using - client purchased - Sony Excellance miniDV tapes. I am now totally switching to Panasonic tape stock. The recommendations I've read said to clean the heads for 5-10 seconds ONLY before switching and then STAY SWITCHED!

What say you DVX users?

Thanks!

Re: PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

We shoot weddings and only the MQs. I have never used the PQs, so I wouldn't know what the difference would be.

Re: PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

I read in a thread to stay with one kind of tape not to switch back and forth, i am not talking brand, I am talking the specific tape MQ or PQ.

Re: PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

I've read the same threads, but I guess I always thought they read switching between brand tapes (eg sony vs. panasonic).

I will most likely shoot on the PQ and then when all is said and done, I can always transfer my footage to the MQ for archiving.

I am still interested in hearing from more users out there.

Thanks!

Re: PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

MQs will last longest and are what Panasonic reccomends. It won't kill you to use the PQs though - they're both dry lube - so it's really your call. MQs will be the best possible tape though...

Re: PQ for shooting or MQ for shooting?

The MQ tapes use a "Dry" lubrication system, the others use a "Wet" lubrication. From Panasonic and other fourums I have searched, the general consensus is to pick one type and stay with it. The logic behind this is that both tapes leave lubricant behind. You mix wet and dry and you end up with mud. Sure it's not going to be a problem immediatly, but over time it could add up to extra cleanings and / or the heads becoming clogged right in the middle of the new music video your shooting for MTV.

Mike,

Aparently someone lied to one of us, the person I spoke to at panasonic said the MQ were the only dry. I'll look into it again.

Interesting - I've used PQs in a pinch before and haven't had any problems at all...
