ppro and widescreen option

Hi guys,
this is my 1st post, even if I have been reading the forum for a while.
I shot a short film last week with a DVX100 (the original PAL version) setting F6 scene file and applying the "scotch tape" method to have a good 16:9 footage.
In PPro 1.5 I opened a new project setting PAL widescreen 48KHz, progressive scan, and captured the whole footage.
I was completely upset when I saw black bars on the left and right side of the monitor window :crybaby: .
I was expecting to see them on the top and bottom sides.
Did I miss something? Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure the reason you had this problem is because you captured it as 16:9 but you shot it at 4:3 I use FCP but I'm sure capturing is no different. I don't believe and program will crop 4:3 footage during capture. Yo should try changing your capture settings to 4:3 Good Luck.

Thanks,
I will try asap. I hope ppro will finally export 16:9 as I expect.
The only drawback is that my editing in 4:3 will be a 16:9 blackhole since I do not have any preview of the black bars.

Ram is correct. You shot 4x3 so you should capture 4x3. You can right click on the files in the Premiere project window and change the aspect ratio back to normal (0.9).

If you just want black bars on the top and bottom of your 4x3 footage then just edit your project in a 4x3 project and you can apply the "clip" filter.

If you want a true 16x9 project...then you edit your 4x3 footage in a widescreen project, and you increase the scale of the file until it fills the window on the sides. This will chop the top and bottom off. Now you have a widescreen project, that when burned to a DVD, will fill the whole screen on a 16x9 television, and display letterboxed on a 4x3.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help.
I tried both your suggestions.

1) I think that the clip filter acts as I did when I shot my film. So I do not loose anything, but it is a 4x3 view with black bars and I do not really know how to put them perfectly.

2) the scale option takes me to a real 16:9 project but I guess that I am loosing image quality since I have to enlarge it to fit into the widescreen.

I tried another solution.
3) I changed my footage from 1,067 (PAL original ratio) into PAL widescreen through the interpret footage. Then I exported into a widescreen AVI file. It seems working.

The image quality seems the same as 2 solution.
Do you think that a 4x3 with the black bars would give me a best result?
Thanks again

It all depends on what you intend to view your final work on. If you intend to view it on a regular television but want the widescreen look then adding the black bars will yield the best results.

Using the scale option will lose some quality. But if you use the scale option...and burn a widescreen dvd. And you watch that footage on a regular television...the quality will be quite close to the original.

Can someone PLEASE advise me on the proper settings I need for my DVX 100A using the Panasonic 16:9 Anamorphic adapter lens.

All I'm getting is squished 4.3 when I capture and try to edit in PPro 1.5. I opened a new project under 24p (which I set in cinematic mode) with 16:9 Wide screed.

The master monitor window shows a 16:9 blank screen but I have black edges on both sides and the picture looks squished.

How do I get the 16:9 video to strech out and work as it should.

I'm shooting in normal mode (which I was told to do)

Any help greatly appreciated !!!
