pp2 take advantage of dual core??

I just did a little project - imported a divx avi file, applied levels and resized it and am rendering. the file is about 3 mins long and so far it's been rendering for 24 minutes and says 19 remaining. My systems is a core 2 duo 6300 overclocked to 2.1ghz w/ 1gig ddr ... the cpu cores are at about 50% each. First of - why is PP's handling of compressed content so terrible (is there any fix?)
second - why is it not utilizing the cpu's fully?

any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

When PPro 2 starts up, it should say somewhere on the Splash screen "Multi-processor aware." If it doesn't some reason the program isn't seeing both processors, and the 50/50 split will happen.

Second, I don't believe that all compression schemes in the program are SMP, so try exporting with the mpeg encoder, or AVI. I've never benchmarked it (I know for a fact the Flash video encoder is not SMP aware).

Make sure you have all the chipset drivers installed for your New 965 or 975X intel based motherboard. Those are available at www.intel.com

I know this is a silly answer, but Windows XP home is not capeable of multiple processors. XP Pro, windows 2000 PRO, and vista are the only three operating systems capeable of running Ppro 2 with multi-processor support. Your only soulution if you are running someting else: Upgrade.

Also, try running a benchmark that is SMP aware to make sure everything is set up properly. I think SuperPi Mod may support SMP, I know for a fact AFX 7 is SMP aware as well.

I can tell you that After Effects DEFINETLY does not take full advantage of Multi-core processors. I didn't realize how much unused power I had until I tried out the Nucleo plug-in for AE. It gave me a noticeable boost in performance with my multicores. I would assume, that Premiere doesn't utilize the processors any better than AE does. Why, I don't know.

While you may be right that XP Home will not support multiple processors, the E6300 (any duo chip for that matter) are not considered multiple processors to windows. They are multi-core single processors. If you open up the task manager and see multple "CPU Usage History" graphs under the performance tab, you are using both processors. When I do an mpeg export from Premiere Pro 2.0, both "cores's" on my system (E6300 running at 3.0 ghz, XP Home) go to about 90-95 usage)

What is your disk situation (SATA, ATA)? Are you reading and writing to the same disk? Is your hard drive on the same cable as your DVD/CD drive? If you are only getting to 50% CPU utilization, something is keeping the processors from having enough data to run faster.

Read it and weap.

But, at the same time you are right. Not all rendering functions in AFX7 are SMP aware. For example I couldn't get higher than 50% on rendering text in 3d space with a moving camera.
