PP is freezing up. Why?

I recently got a new external hard drive so I could have more room to put my project. But now when I try to render or save anything (like my exported project as one whole file on a new timeline) PP freezes up.

In other words. I exported my chopped up edited project and made it one whole file. And when I opened it up onto another timeline as one whole "block", along with audio, I need to render it. But I dont have enbough room in that hard drive so I moved it the new one to render and thats when I get all the freezing problems.

Both the exported file (audio and video) and the new PP project (witht he whole file) are in the same hard drive.

Any incite will be appreciated.

Depending on the version of Premiere you're using, it is unnecessary to render your project. One can instead nest the original sequence in the new one, saving disk space.

Sounds like you might have a problem with your external drive. Is it a packaged solution (came complete with drive in case) or did you buy the external case and drive seperately? Some of the external drive cases don't support larger drives.

D-bert's suggestion about nesting sequences is good if you're running Premiere Pro. I've noticed when I try to render a nested sequence, PPro will sit there and think about it for a while before it starts visibly rendering. It has the appearance that it's locked up. So be patient. Use a tool for monitoring CPU activity and see if the CPU is real busy when you think it's locked up. If the CPU is not busy when the hang occurs, then it's more likely that you have an I/O problem to the disk.

Is it an external USB drive? USB2 drives sometimes drop their speed to USB1 level is the mouse is used (USB1 mouse). USB1 is much too slow for video. Firewire drives are safer in that respect.

Just quessing...
