PP => DVD... straight to Encore, or Media Encoder First?

I'm making my first DVDs in CS5 (coming from Avid/Sorenson).

I was ready to use Media Encoder to make a m2v, but I saw a tutorial that says you can go straight from PP to Encore, skipping Media Encoder.

Is this a valid workflow? Are there advantages to going through Media Encoder first?
(I don't need menus for this project- but if I did, Media Encoder is the way to go, right?).

This is with 1920x1080 AVCHD (AF100) footage. What's the best workflow for best quality?

Thanks!

I haven't done tests and can't prove it, but it stands to reason that if anything, Encore would be optimized to produce the best encoding for a DVD. In Encore try using Dynamic Link: File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import Premiere Sequence. Needing a menu or not makes no difference.

I'll disagree and say go through media encoder...you have more control over your settings in media encoder and can really fine-tune the output...Also, if you ever need to make changes to the DVD layout (chapters, menus, graphics, etc etc) you won't have to re-render the entire project since your material will already be transcoded.

Having said that, I've tried both ways and haven't noticed much of a difference as far as quality is concerned.

Thanks for the answers guys (conflicting though they may be... ha ha!)

Guess I'll do 2 short tests, see if I can see any difference. Like I said, on this one, no menus needed, so I can't see going back to it for changes.

Where's Jimerson on this one??? :undecided

...Also, if you ever need to make changes to the DVD layout (chapters, menus, graphics, etc etc) you won't have to re-render the entire project since your material will already be transcoded.

With either approach, your video material does not need to be re-transcoded if you only change those other elements.

You can also use dynamic link, but render the timeline in Media Encoder and select the output as the transcode for the timeline in Encore.

I believe in general rendering things in Media Encoder is faster than rendering something that involves dynamic link, but I haven't sat down and really tested it.

I always go with dynamic link to encore and burn my dvd, i don't see any point having another step between these two. just my 0.2

Well, I went straight to Encore and it does look fine.
Suppose I'd have to check the time /quality difference of going through Encoder first to truly test the difference.
Thanks for all replies...

The controls you have for the export settings in Encore are exactly like what you would have in Media Encoder. Send the timeline to Encore and go from there.
