PP CS5 exporting timeline with AVCHD taking forever!

I'm one of those many FCP users looking to make the jump to Premiere. I work on a 8-core Mac Pro (early 2008) with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 512 MB video card ands potent the Panasonic AF100 which records AVCHD media.

I just did a shoot of some talking heads and after cloning the card to my hard drive, I imported the AVCHD material and lined it up on a timeline for dailies review. I added timecode burn-in and text to ID the clips and went to export the timeline… everything was nice and straight forward up until that point. The exports are taking forever!

My first attempt was to output the 30-minute timeline as H.264 mp4 for iPod/iPhone. It was dragging so long that I canceled it. I decided to try exporting as ProRes (LT) mov but was getting the same result… it was basically exporting out at about 1 frame/second!

I felt like I had been transported back to 2003 when I first rendered out a DV timeline for DVD on my dual-processor PowerMac G4… it was painful. I must be doing something wrong, yes?

Yea sounds like something is not right. I dont know about the 2008 modell, and if the timecode is messing the export.
Is your system alright otherwise? graphics. drivers, updated CS5 and so on? Is your CPU peaking?
Try exporting using other templates, try using raw clips and no fx or cc, just to sort out what could be the problem.

Also make sure your source drive and destination drive (for the render) are different physical drives.

Your GPU maybe the problem. Are you using CUDA-MPE and have checked on MBD and MRQ? If so, you slow GPU that can't really handle CUDA processing is slowing down the whole process.

Rendering at a lower resolution will always be slower than rendering at the footage's native resolution because it needs to use heavy downscaling algorithms. If you need it to export faster, uncheck the maximum rendering quality check mark...it'll go much faster but the downscale quality will take a hit.
