PP CS3 Trial: HD Editing Disabled???

Hey guys,

I finally bought an HVX200a, shot some test footage to cut on trial versions of a few NLE's to test how they handle a P2 workflow (and to test my computer's capability, to be honest).

So I dl'd the CS3 trial to take it for a test spin... and when I went to start a new project, I found that there's no selectable HD editing presets. What gives?

Is there any way around this? I called Adobe this morning, but was on hold for over 10 minutes before I got to even speak with a single person, and got disconnected (damn cell phones).

I figured the major update in CS3 would be P2 presets (among other HD-related upgrades). I can't imagine not being able to test the program with HD footage... makes no sense. Call me crazy, but I think we can all assume CS3 works just fine with standard def DV footage.

Any help? Thanks!
(I tried searching all over for info regarding this, but came up empty)

HD editing is indeed disabled in CS3 trial.
No, HDV editing is disabled. Editing HD material with a card from Blackmagic Design works as a charm on trials. HDV is MPEG2 and all MPEG2 functionality is disabled due to licensing issues in Premiere Pro.

TWJP, i am not sure if trial version can be upgraded or not. CS3 must be upgraded to 3.1 or 3.2 in order to be able to edit DVCPro HD. Go to Help > Updates and see if you can upgrade your trial to 3.2. If it works, you will be able to edit material from your HVX200.

Averdahl,

I don't have a Blackmagic card... I'll just be capturing the P2 footage from the camera's usb port, until I get an expresscard--->PCMCIA adapter.

ADDED:

I ended up getting CS3. I was looking forward to testing CS3 against Vegas with my HD footage (as I've never used Vegas before), but neither trial offered native P2 support... Bummer.

I did... it didn't update anything within premiere. I got a ton of extra language support for Adobe Reader though! :undecided

Actually, it was 3.1 that introduced P2 MXF support; 3.2 brought XDCAM HD and EX support.

I think the current trial version is actually 3.0.1, so it won't have support for either of those formats. And, the trial can't be updated--only fully-licensed versions can.

As far as P2 support goes, I think Premiere Pro has got one of the best, if not THE best P2 implementation (some swear by Edius, but I've not had a chance to try that). Vegas probably wouldn't have been the best choice--as it's a Sony product, you're not likely to see native P2 editing in it anytime soon. However, you can add P2 support to Vegas through the use of DVFilm's Raylight--it's a third-party plug-in, though, and not native.

I think you'll like Premiere's implementation of P2--it makes working with the format a breeze. Good luck!

Yeah, judging from the claims on the adobe site, and from what I've experienced in past versions... I really look forward to sitting down with it and learning how to cut in HD. :)

Well, here's the best part: with the way P2 works in PPro, you don't have to learn anything new! I've cut 1080/24p projects off of a USB drive, and really couldn't tell that I wasn't working in DV--it's that smooth. Now, file management with P2 is a different story--that workflow is certainly different than what you may be accustomed to when working with a tape-based format. With a little bit of forethought and common sense, though, you'll wonder how you ever worked with video before.

If you've got After Effects (through the Production Bundle or Master Collection), you'll enjoy the native P2 workflow in it as well. I really don't mean to sound like I'm an Adobe phanboi, because there's more than a few things I'm not totally sold on, but working with this format in this way is pretty awesome.

I wanted to try out CS3 too, and was like you, disappointed when I found I wasted all that time for nothing. However wrong it may be, I found the crack for it, and gave it a full on try out. It was buggy as hell on my machine, and somehow I doubt it was all due to being cracked.

Wow, I never would have thought you could cut off of USB HDD's (for HD)! That's great to know... thanks.

has anyone used PPCS3 on a MAC yet? Just curious. I'm editing my first HD project and I'm woriking on PC right now. My computer I don't think will be fast enough. I have a 3.2GHz Hyperthread with 3 gigs ram and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 graphics card. So I'm debating if I should buy a new PC or just go onto a MAC. I've used both Premiere and FCP so just trying to figure out what would be best. From what I hear the PPCS3 works awesome so if anyone has any advice. thanks!
