PP 1.5 Crashes with External Firewire Source

Hello All:

I' ve just had a new computer built, P4 3.2 HT, 2GIG's of RAM, Dual Monitors, etc.... The problem is the $15 Firewire Card brings the whole $1800 system down. Whenever trying to stream or capture from Firewire the signal breaks up and the whole system just shuts down. Video streams fine from the same drive via USB2.

I know I've seen this before, but can't remember the fix. Any ideas?

All the best,

Michael

Firewire isnt up to the data transfer rates required by an NLE.

Run one or two SATA drives and use the externals for strorage, backups etc...

Yes, I agree, I will try and change the card. I've been editing with external Firewire Drives on my Dell Laptop for over a year, and never had a problem like this.

This happened to me today when usng a different camera to capture (never happened with the DVX, before or after), PP just lost the connection in the middle of capture and was stuck. there was no apparent reason for this (wasn't even near the PC/camera when it happened)
I had to quit PP, I reset everything and tried again with a different FW cable and it worked
could be some short (but since yours is a new system it could also be the card or even the motherboard)

I just installed the same card into a different system, and it crashed in just the same way. Seems most likely to be the card. Thanks for all the input.

All the best,

Michael
