I'm trying to get a answer to the ques. Will FCP 5 work on a G4? and furthermore FCP Studio also? Has any tried if its shipped? If noy whats a reccomended G4 sys. for FCP 4.5
Yes, FCP5 will run on a G4. As for the entire studio, the one that may give you issues is Motion. Motion runs optimally on a dual G5, but it will run on some G4s. Check the requirements at apple.com.
You need to upgrade the video card to do Motion. the 9600 isn't standard in any g4. Also, bump the ram to 2gig and make sure it is a dual processor. My dual 1.25 will work fine with that set up.
FCP Studio will run on a G4, but you may not like it there...
The minimum G4 for FCP5 is a 500 MHz, for Motion2 it's an 867 MHz PLUS a qualified video board. These are truly minimums, the recommended G4 is a 1GHz dualie or greater with all the RAM you can stuff in it.
If you aspire to cut multicam HD footage, I doubt there's a G4 out there that will keep you happy, ditto for serious Motion work. The thing to remember here is that Apple's video architecture features 'scalability', not black magic. I have a loaded 1.42GHz G4 dualie (2 GB RAM, internal Ultra160 RAID) and a loaded 2.5GHz G5 dualie (4 GB RAM, internal 1TB SATA RAID). Both will get Studio, but the G4 will only be giving me about half the performance in the main apps (FCP, STP, DVDSP) and won't run Motion2 without a videocard upgrade...
This isn't to say that a G4 isn't still a good machine, I have 4 and love them all... They can still get the job done in SD and on more 'sane' projects. But don't expect miracles, the name of the game in HD and real-time graphics is raw power.
