Powermac 5G and FCP?

I have been a PC user for 25 years and I know nothing about a Apple.

I currently use Vegas 7 and Studio 11 for videos. My camera is a Sony V1U.

And so far Im not impressed with this computer and software. I keep seeing these HD Quicktime and HD FLash videos and Im thinking its time to buy at least a G5. These videos are beautiful!

Would a Powermac G5, and something around a 2ghz dual core be enough for FCP?
And would my 24" monitor work too?

The PowerMac is a dead branch on the Apple tree. Unless you are really have no choice, you should look at a more recent Mac with an Intel chip in it (all the new Macs).

Will the PowerMac run FCP? Sure, and your monitor will probably work as well. But there's no garantee how long Apple will support the PowerMac in future software.

THat is what I am using and it works fine. You can pick one up pretty cheap too. It really depends on what you want to spend. BUT. like cool said the powermac has been surpassed. get what you can afford, but really there is nothing wrong with vegas?

I agree with Cool. The Dual 2.0G works fine with FCP (I still use mine), but if you can, find an older MacPro instead. The PCI-X slots on the G5 is an OLD interface for cards. Get a machine that has PCIe. Plus the Intels are just plain faster. AND...you can partition the hard drive and install WINDOWS if you ever get lonely for your PC.

I don't know if this is a problem for anyone doing 'pro' camera work... but I bought a consumer Sony, HDR-SR11, a month ago, and when reading how to import the AVCHD formated material, there was some mention that the codec was only available on the Intel Mac platforms.

Unless the G5 is free, or nearly free, I'd get a used/refurb MacPro. Render and export times are much faster on a MacPro and HDV is more of a CPU hog than not. Motion and Color will also run better on the newer GFX cards that aren't available for G5s. There are already intel only/intel optimized things on the Mac and that list is only going to get longer.

If you can't find/trust a used machine, consider going the Apple education route to get a pretty good discount on new and refurb'd hardware. Ask a student you know or go to one of the campus stores.
