I have a 12inch powerbook- I work on documentries and was wondering if it would be possible to get high audio recording quality even timecoded from my laptop? I use Lavs and would want to plug into it direct or would I need say the new mackie onyx mixer with firewire capabilities? I would prefer to be wireless and not have to plug AC into anything for a mixer etc.

Re: PowerBook Field recorder?

why -whats wrong with dvx and mixer between ?
the computer recording good for static situations only -doesnt work in real filmaking world

Re: PowerBook Field recorder?

Than why do people own DAT or MINIDisc recorders or are people so excited about sound device 744? Obvisouly there are situations that call for external audio capture- just wondering if a powerbook would be a usable and high end answer.

they own it becouse the mobility and quality (minidisk -quality -not reallly -better then nothing), not every dat can sorvive in hard condition and not every dat have the same analog domain -some sucks and some have exelent pres , some dats like steladat crashed in the midle even  cost more then 12000$ (twice then the pd-4  10 times more then non tc tascam), but usially (and i own one for 8 years ) working with any significan problem -you turn it on and thats run - the regullar computer crashes every second day in my house and taikng ages to start  every time -thats exacly what you dont have on film -time for soundman problems . so do you a faywor  ,if you dont have time and working outside in hostel invaerment ( outside of your house or the studio) use something that would save you from loosing money (yours or others), there is a huge diference in building quality  between location recorders and studio ones ,
the people are exited from 744 or any other machines in the same class becouse  they are going to save a lot of money on  the long run (no mooving parts) and exellent recording quality in size of  6 rothmans packs , iam also wery exited about , would shear with you after i get one :-)
live the power book in your studio  , thats where it belong

Re: PowerBook Field recorder?

I am of the firm belief that laptops are still completely unreliable for field recording, no matter what make or model. This is why there are dedicated machines for recording audio in the field.

Sound Devices is coming out with two new hard disk recorders. The 722 and the 744t. Check out www.sounddevices.com
