On Apple website i read about these new Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz i was expecting to see the intel based Power Macs but i find this instead, are these the ones with Intel chips ? i do not see Intel being mentioned in the specification. So just wondering what is happening with the Intel-Apple Power Macs.

Any news ?

The new macs are what probably will be the last incarnation of the G5 Macs.

The Intel macs won't be out until next year, and they will probably begin by switching over the lower end models first (i.e. Mac Mini, Imac, etc).

So it will probably be the end of 2006 at the earliest before we see an intel based PowerMac.
Most likely sometime in 2007 (just a guess)

There's no real way of knowing...but I'd point out that we're comparing the speed of a computer available today with something that's going to come out in a year and a half at the earliest...maybe a year. So yeah, I would say the intel's will be faster.

I got a Dual 2.0 G5 in April when the updates came out. The other day a buddy got a dual-core 2.0. Mine actually is outrunning his on renders and encoding.

It will be much faster if you could run it today on Intel, for the same price the intel/AMD based machines are much faster.
I've tried it (installed os x on my p4 3.2) and it really works fast, but since there is no support for firewire yet I couldn't test FCP (which worked fine, except for capture)

You have to be a developer, which is 500$ a year, and then you have to pay 1000$ for the devkit. you get a PC (Intel mother board with P4) with OSX Intel install disc.

There is a version floating around in the internet, but apple released two updates since and they weren't broken.
This only proves OSX can be installed on most new PCs (intel or AMD) which means apple will have a hard time over-pricing the intel based macs (when all the hardware is the same) and I'm sure in a few years you'll be able to buy just the OS.

Anyway, when the intel macs come out you'll be able to buy windows XP (or Vista by then) and install it on the same computer and have both OSC and windows on the sme hardware.

I can't see Apple waiting over a year to upgrade these Powermacs. I would guess more like 6 months, and a probable switch to intel then.

Hey, what do I know.
You're probably right.
I was just towing the Apple line... what I outlined was what Steve Jobs said at the Intel/Mac announcement earlier this year. But you're probably right... they can't really go anywhere with the quad G5 (seeing as 2.5 seems to be the limit, the 2.7s were nothing but overclocked 2.5 G5s).

So 6 months might be more realistic.
But I would say that's probably a minimum.

Ok, for the $24 question, will the OSX Intel be totally backwards compatable with all current apps? I still have a couple to "classic" apps, will the the new hardware/software run the classic environment? Ok, it was two questions, I owe you $24.

You can install OSX86 on regular PCs (Intels and AMD64s with SSE2 and 3).

Reportedly, OSX runs faster on PCs than it does on Macs. :engel017:

Are these stable installations with full perhipheral support or are they "Rube Goldberg" type hacks?

Stable - Yes, Full - No.
Apple hasn't released a version with all the drivers yet so currently only onboard Intel graphics cards are supported (I forget the specific model).
there are also problems with some of the network cards and like I mentioned before FireWire capturing didn't work for me.

and yes, it's much faster on the PC then it is on the MAC, after all the PC hardware is much better now and that's the reason for the change.
That's why I find the performance page on apple's site funny, they compare hardware they should compare OS
