Potential Problem: 60i to 24p conversion?

Hey guys,

I am sorry if these are simple questions. I've done some searching and haven't found anything that EXACTLY answers my question.

So I've got a bunch of footage from an HVX. Majority of it was shot 720p24, SOME of the shots are in 60i as well though. Some of this was on purpose, some by mistake. I didn't realize that some of the shots were 60i (the ones I assumed were shot in 24p) until AFTER I'd edited the damn thing. I am now realizing that when I use the FCP HD Frame Converter tool to conform 60 to 23.98 it resets the timecode and also doesn't take into account my In and Out points, it just does the entire raw file. I am now freaking out that I have to re-edit all of the scenes which were shot at 60 frames.

My question: is there a way to re-connect my media, according to the same points in timecode in which I have cut each clip already, to connect with my newly conformed 24p footage?

I apologize if it's a simple question but I have just switched to Final Cut this year and I'm still working out the kinks. I see things like Media Manager and Reconnect Media, but cannot figure out how to use them.

Another thing: I am using that stupid frame converter in FCP. I have read on here a lot that people are using Cinema Tools (I have never bothered with that program since I've never shot anything other than 30i on FCP before this project). Is there an easier way to be conforming all of my shots from 60 to 24? If so, would somebody mind explaining? I can't figure out Cinema Tools for the life of me.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much guys! :)

Sure you can use RECONNECT MEDIA from the File Menu. But it will require some manual adjustment of in/out points. Assuming you get matching timecode. If not, you'll need to reset the timecode on the clips first. If it were me, I'd not bother with that and just manually eyeball and put the new clips back in to match the old edits by hand.

OK. Thanks for your reply NoahK. My question was more HOW to use the reconnect media feature. And also how to conform footage from 60i to 24p in Cinema Tools? I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear. Do you have any insight on that?

Also, the scene I have is about 3-4 mins long, with approx. 50 cuts so to me personally as an editor, I feel that would be WAY too time consuming to go back and match those cuts up eye to eye. Especially considering I have no matching timecode. When you say reset the timecode you mean on the clips I already have in my timeline correct?

Thanks again for your speedy response.

what are you expecting to get out of conforming the stuff that was shot 60i... there's no pulldown to remove to make it 23.98, it's still going to look video-ish. plus i think you are misunderstanding what the "conform" tool does.

if you bought the natress conversion plugin, you could convert it to 24p. you can download a free demo of it to see if it's what you need. but i don't think cinema tools will do what you are trying to accomplish, though.

are you trying to get everything onto a 23.98 timeline? i'm not really sure what you're ultimate goal is with these clips.

If its any consolation, we used to eyematch whole features back in the early days of offline editing and conforming to film, but I understand your reluctance to do it. I woudl suggest the Natress thing (he is a smart guy) and make new 24p clips from the old 60i files, drop in the new 24p over the existing 60i in the timeline, match as best can and then just be more careful. There are a bunch of other ways, but this will get you results fast and resolve your current problem without any blood loss. If its any consolation, it could be worse...

bigbossbmb... maybe I am mistaken. Is it possible they are 60p? It was "overcrank" on the HVX or whatever. Please forgive the fact that I am completely new to all this HD stuff and this is my first time editing on it.

The point was to use some for slow-mo, but then we decided we wanted to just run it normally. So I'm meant to conform the clips to 24, which will then mean the duration has been changed and so then I'm meant to speed them up 40%. That is what I was told.

I have tried it with one clip using FCP's built in HD frame converter and it worked fine. I was just devestated to find out it resets the timecode and it would make matching my already edited clips up by eye. I then read that Cinema Tools could do the same thing and with all my clips at once (rather than one at a time with the stupid FCP frame converter) and I was just wondering if somebody could tell me how to do that. Also, would Cinema Tools keep the same TC?

I'm a little confused here. Sorry for being a noob. :( haha

PS: now I think I figured it out in Cinema Tools, but when I tell it to Batch Conform my 60fps clips in a folder, it skips them all saying they all have Temporal Compression and it doesn't change them. WTF!?
