Post-production advice

Hi,

So just wrapped on my first feature, about to get into post now and have a few questions please. I shot 720p on HVX201 and was going to do post myself but think I should leave it to someone who specialises in it. So my question really is whether there are people that do the editing, adding music & effects (I will do music and sound score myself) , special effects and grading or do I go to separate people for each of that? Is there a going rate for the low budget end, if so how much roughly please? I'm in London, England. Generally any advice on this phase will be much appreciated,e.g. what to look for when considering post guys.

Thanks

There are certainly people who specialize in one or several of these different crafts - it all depends on how good you think your skills are to achieve what you think you need. I do recommend that you get an editor to work with you to tell the story. Find someone who has edited similar stories in a way that you would like it to be told. The same can be said for sound design, color correction. etc. Then it comes down to budget, people's schedules, etc.

I just finished a feature that I produced and edited. Even though I have edited many features myself, I put my producer hat on and chose to co-edit with someone who had skills that I wanted applied to this movie based on his credits on films that were in the same genre. And I can't start to praise enough all the little moments and insight that were added that might have otherwise not been explored. In the end, it made for a better film.
