THE DIGITAL LUMIERE PROJECT
116 years ago, Auguste and Louis Lumière invented theCinématographe,one of the first cinema cameras in history that also had the ability of developing and projecting film. The film was hand cranked through the camera, which could only hold 17 meters of film (approximately 50 seconds). Their short films were mainly documentary style actualities, capturing performers, every day people, and life as it happened.
100 years later in 1995, 40 international directors were asked to make a short film using the original Cinématographe invented by the Lumière Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds, (2) no synchronized sound was permitted, and (3) no more than three takes.
Since 1895, filmmaking has come a very long way. Its production, technology, and exhibition have all changed as the world transitioned into a digital era. What once required an immense budget, a studio, expensive equipment, and a large-scale distribution to theaters can now be created by anyone with an inexpensive camera, a computer, and access to the internet.
The Digital Lumiere Project’s goal is blend the classic art of filmmaking with modern technology and social networking.

1. Use a cellphone, Iphone, webcam to capture your film
2. Must be one continuous take, no edits, and does not exceed 30 secs.
3. audio must be live and not added later*
