Possibly moving to NC

Hi, I just found out that I might have to go to North Carolina(Charlotte) for a project for 6 months (I am a software engineer). Is it a good place in terms of living and more importantly interacting with artists and doing shorts films?

It kinda sucks because i just settled in NJ/NY and started interacting with some local DP's and Artists. Now I will have to start it all over again.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

-Kris

Feedback should be easy to get here.

Moderators Barry Green, John Hudson, David Jimerson and Jeremy Ordan all live in NC.

Yes...

thanks Jared, sorry I was just sort of taking in the news and did'nt realise to check the board for people's location.

wow so NC is the epicentre of DVX/HVX world! thats comforting to know.

Now if only I can make some great new friends and meet some great actors to start shooting some fantastic shorts !!

Wishful thinking I guess but I will have to start somewhere.

thanks again,

-Krish

Thanks Jeremy, this might be a bit of a bone headed question but how would you compare it (weather wise) to NY/NJ, SF. Those are some of the places I have lived but never in NC or vicinity.

Cheers,

Charlotte is pleasant city. It has a pretty downtown and lots of countryside around it. It's in the middle of the state, so it's about equal distance from both mountains and beaches.

Ridiculous taxes. But a pleasant city.

Krish,

Summer can be very balmy (July - Sept), winters are mostly mild in Charlotte. We have about 64 degrees today, but had a snowfall of 2" two weeks ago.

Spring lasts about 10 minutes. Fall and early winter is amazing - leaves turn around the 3rd week of October and you can hang out on the porch through mid-December.

So I could probably hang out on your porch all "winter," I would imagine.:)

In Charlotte owning property is expensive because you are paying for that basketball arena that people voted against

[only Erik, David, & I will understand that]

can he shave that mustache please.

ok i am not planning to buy a property so that should help. Its really just for about 4-6 months (hopefully).

I like the fact that there is no snow !! also 64 degree temp is not too bad at all. Its more like San Francisco weather.

Cool. so looks like i am all set. I might be their as early as next week!.

Ok now that all you guys are there can somebody help me with my DVX100B and M2 setup. I will bring it along and maybe hook up with who ever has some time to spare. I got my M2 about 3 months ago but have not been super satisfied with the setup. I know its a great product and I am looking forward to shooting with it.

Would appreciate any help.

The same thing happened to the Durham crowd a few years back only theirs was for minor league baseball.

"Bull Durham" anyone?

I once got stuck in a blizzard driving from Raleigh to Charlotte so don't count on the weather always being nice. Although it beats Boston any day.

Charlotte is one of the quieter towns I have been to given the size.

Aside from the missing Ferry Building not visible at the end of Tryon Street, you could mistake downtown Charlotte (which is bustling M-F, 8am - 6pm) for San Francisco's financial district. It's a small area, but very clean by metropolitan city standards.

My wife works for an institutional investment firm downtown and we'll often meet for drinks or dinner after she get's done working.

There are some nice Charlotte-exclusive restaurants there, along with some chain outlets like Morton's and Dean and Deluca Market. If you're renting - especially on a stipend - there are a lot of live-work-loft spaces available right downtown. Charlotte is very sleepy on most weekends.

Charlotte is a small town with some very tall buildings.

And yes, Jeremy, I, too, voted against the basketball arena.
