Possibly In Over My Head...

Okay, so I'm the process of aquiring some lights off of ebay, when I came across a 4k Mole Zip Soft Light.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180084019023&rd=1&rd=1

I have a few questions before I go buying a light and not having the things required to run it.

I understand I won't be able to run this off house circuits, but of course, that was never intended (I need it for music video shoots for clubs, churches, large areas, etc). My question is, will I need anything like a ballast or something to run this?

Well, you came across a great light. THe 4K Soft by MR is a nice, clean light and produces alot more light than heat, in a L/H ratio.

You wont have to worry about a ballast for this light, as generally only HMI's require a ballast to strike. However, this light does run power from its 60 Amp paddle, (the MC257G stage plug) which means your going to need some power distro gear to get you up and running.

Best of luck!

Thanks guys for the response,

Any suggestion on power distribution options? The guy said it comes with a 60 amps bates or something along the lines like that, so if you can chime me in on that, I'd greatly appreciate it!

A 60A Bates is exactly what I would expect on a 4k source. You can safely convert it over to a 50A commercial connector and still be well within the margins.

A 4K fixture is extremely impractical outside of a studio environment. If you're looking for a soft fixture to use on indie films etc., pass on a 4K. The largest fixture you can even think about powering off of a house circuit is a 2k, and even then it'd have to be a newer house with good wiring.

Barry is right, very impractical unless you have good clean power. I have seen these lights re-wired to plug into two different edison outlets, but what a drag to do this. Bigger is better sometimes, but you have a whopper on your hands that will require a genny to use. Unless you own a grip truck with everything else on board, I'd pass on this and go for a 2-2k's of the same type(if that's what your looking for). Good luck.

Sorry, I just re-read your first post..Even though I stand by my first comments, this
baby is a M U T H E R . It is great for large areas and cleaning up a white walls for studio use. If you have access to power, this will be the big gun in your arsenal. I also recommend a very strong combo stand on wheels for this unit. I will state again ,that this baby sucks up power like an RV sucks gas.
I hope you can get the juice for it if you buy this unit.

Well I've decided to pass on this opportunity. I really wanted something a little more practical and was thinking about just trying to find two 2k lights, but I saw this and jumped at it.

Now doing my research, it sounds more like a hassle than a convenience.
