Possible to Edit 30p & 60i Together ???

I have 30p footage (as opposed to 24p because I would like to use slow motion effect in post) and 60i footage that I'd like to combine in the same project.

Is it possible to edit the 60i and the 30p on the same timeline in FCP? What about in FCX?

If yes, would the 30p look be maintained or compromised? Likewise, would the 60i lose any quality?

Lastly, would I be able to achieve the 30p look of this 30p/60i final project when I burn to DVD using DVD Studio Pro or iDVD?

I am new to dvxuser.com as of yesterday, and I've learned quite a bit. Wonderful work you do here, and thanks a trillion for your help !!!

Welcome! With FCP you can only have one format at a time in a sequence. If you really, really need the option to do this and don't mind the PC, check out Pinnacle's Liquid Edition 6.

You shoudl be able to do this with FCP. You need to go with either:
A - make 60i sequence and place your 30p footage into the sequenc Should maintain the same 'look' of 30p. Shoudl be fine going to DVD.
B - go with 30p sequence . 60i images will be merged.

Best bet is to take a couple of shots and try it out.

Um yes, you can mix them, but it will not playback in realtime it would require rendering. You wouldn't want to edit this way.
Edition = mix & match no rendering.
And yes, you would still maintain the 30p look if you dumped it into a 60i sequence upon burning to DVD.

However, it's gonna be like... um film cinematic look, and whoa who turned on the "camcorder"

Since the camera records progressive frames to an interlaced data stream on the tape, you can edit 60i and 30p together on a 29.97 timeline without needing to render any of the footage.

If you playing the edited footage back at High Quality, FCP will combine the fields, so with the 30p footage you won't get the interlacing issues you'll see with the 60i footage.

if you using a lower res quality when playing back the footage then FCP uses only 1 field to display the image.

Technically.. since all footage is recorded on the DV tape as 60i, you could import any footage from a miniDV at normal 60i...

the only problems you'll have is if you change the timebase of the sequence to something different.

Dang, duh, Loki is correct. This is the same as matching the 60i (normal mode) and 30p (frame movie mode on Canon cameras) in the timeline. Yes this plays fine without rendering. Sorry for any confusion - that's what I get for reading through this too fast... One thousand lashings!

Thanks much for your advice!

If I learn anything interesting when capturing or editing the different progressive/interlaced footage, I'll post it.
