Portlandia Titles in Vegas?

Was wondering about how the titles were done in this scene:

It's the opening credits for Portlandia, and I'm specifically curious about the part at the 0:15 mark and the 0:18 mark. It appears as though the font is behind parts of the foreground, and this is the effect I'm wondering how to achieve. Any ideas?

The title is mapped on to a 3D plane that has rotoscoped masking for the foreground objects ? ( masks have to have the same motion blur as the foreground subjects to blend in )

I can't think of any non-tedious way of doing this effect.

Yes, Vegas can do this, but it's usually a whole pile of work. Basically you have three tracks:
- 1 - live video
- 2 - title text
- 3 - live video

1 and 3 are identical except 1 has a dynamic mask on it so that some parts are transparent (thus showing tracks 2 and 3 underneath). The dynamic mask is the hard part - frame by frame you have to move it to exactly the right position. If the mask is something simple like a square building moving smoothly across the shot, easy enough. But a complicated or changing shape moving unevenly can take hours to do properly, even for just a shot of a few seconds.

I appreciate the responses guys. I'm not deterred by the amount of work but wondered if there's a plug-in or helper app that facilitates this kind of work?

It's actually not that hard. You can let keyframe interpolation do a lot of the work.

Basically, put a bezier mask around the necessary part of the tree in the first frame it's visible. Then, go to the last frame and move the bezier mask to where it needs to be.

In all the frames in between, the mask will be moving from the first position to the last postion; your job will be to adjust each frame so the mask matches. In a shape as simple as that tree, and with as little time it's on screen, it shouldn't be all that tough. And with each frame you correct, the interpolation down the line will get better, so you may not even have to do each frame manually.

All the 3D plane stuff is done in track motion and it's pretty easy.
