Portable XLR Recorders?

Budget (as in no budget) production, looking to get a simple start in filmmaking.

Been thinking of getting an NTG1or NTG2 for shooting outside, could anybody recommend a good portable compact flash XLR recorder?

Was thinking Marantz pmd660...anyone have any experience with this thing or would you recommend something different?

The stock PMD-660 has noisy preamps, so if you are into a no money budget, I would go for a Zoom H4 and save until you can afford something better. The Oade Brothers sell several digital recorders with custom preamp modifications, including the PMD-660. It voids the manufacturer's warranty, but you get a much better sounding unit. Check out the samples below:

The mods look pretty neat actually, and not too much more for the advanced mod. I was also looking at the Zoom H4 and the Tascam HD-P2, a little more expensive but they definately seem like they'd be worth it.

I've been wanting to experiment with studio audio (voice acting work) as well, so it seems like should probably go for the higher quality more expensive recorder...seems like they would be more versatile with different mics.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it.
