Portable recording Unit Suggestions

Have you guys got any suggestions regarding portable audio recording unit.

Ideally it would be great if it recorded on SD or compact flash cards, as being predominantly a photographer i have a few kicking about.

I did look at the Roland R-05 Portable Digital Pocket Recorder but it looks like it's aimed more towards musicians rather than the budding film maker.

Thanks in advance. :)

a quick search on "portable audio recorder" turned up a ton of info. I'd start there and see what people have already talked about so you can get an idea of what is out there and cost.

DR-100 is a decent entry-level recorder.

For any real advice, you'll need to give more info on your mics and the rest of your audio kit (if any), whether or not you want to be a sound guy or just get enough gear to work with until you're at the point that you hire an outside sound guy, what kind of things you're shooting, etc etc etc.

I have a D7000 and am considering getting one of the ZOOM models for audio.the 1 is cheap and the 4 has more features, but im guessing the actual sound isnt much different. as always depends on your needs.

At the low-end of the price-range, you need the Zoom H4n or Tascam DR-100 if you want to plug XLR mics directly into your recorder. I haven't used the Zoom, but I'm very happy with my DR-100. Last year, I also tried the M-Audio Micro-Track II. You can use XLR mics with XLR to balanced TRS cables. But the battery life was horrendous and it wasn't as intuitive as the DR-100. I'm not a "sound guy," but I had the DR-100 set-up and working great in no time with just a quick skim of the manual.

I like the naient littlebox and sony m10 solution for quality, but for all in one convenience (albeit at a drop in quality) the tascam dr100 and zoom h4n are worth considering. The marantz 661 is better but bigger. We too often compromise our sound, concentrating on picture, so take your time and have a listen to the options if you can..
