I dont know if this is the right forum so feel free to move, but..

i am in the market for a portable screen to show movies places like catering halls (for a wedding for instance).. i need the screen to be portable and with a very wide viewing angle. I'm thinking something like 100" would probably be good.
Based on your previous experience, what's a good size screen to use for say a hall that will average like 200-250 people and what is a good screen to go with for viewing angle and portability (weight).. ease of setup is also nice to have

Thanks!

Do you have a projector? That plays a big part in screen size.

100" diagnal is too small for theatrical style projection--200 peeps. 100" is a typical size for a home theater.

OMG, 100" is typical for a home theater these days? Just how big is this room, anyway? I guess the fast crowd has definitely passed by me.

IMHO, you won't find many wedding videographers slepping around 100+ screens - how would you fit the "portable" monstrosity in the car?

Anyway, before getting seduced into one projector/screen or another, be sure to do your calculations. Here's a nifty web-based calculator.

So for my Dell 2300MP and a 4:3 ratio with a 80" Draper Road Warrior (at 48" x 64, it barely fits in the back of my Toyota Avalon), the throw is 13 feet. More importantly, next going to the Projector Calculator Pro, I see I'm okay with ambient lighting for my "teeny screen" <wink> But once I get back to 18 feet for a 113" diagonal screen, I need a darkened room for my 2300 lumen projector - notice the width is 90" so 30" will be sticking out the window of my car! Guess I'd have to drop off the screen at the reception before the ceremony and hope it's dark before the show. If you have lots of disposable cash, you can get a 3500+ projector for a mere $6,000 and change.

Good luck Mike and let us know what you decide...

Warm Regards, Michael

i'm looking at the panasonic PT-AX100U ... it has many options in terms of throw distance, also, i wont be too limited by the distance. I'll be moving the screen in (or on the roof of) a honda pilot so i can fit a fairly large one in there...

Rehi Mike,

Okay, sounds like you have a plan. Since your model has 2,000 lumens, be sure to find a store that will let you test it with your mega-screen in the same type of lighting you'll find at the ceremony (the acid test). If it's a problem finding your desired model, any 2K projector will give you a feel at the throw power. The point is, once you know what screen you want then hopefully the rest will begin to fall in place. BTW, when I tried a 2.1K projector, the max diagonal was 96", and that was in a dark room - a bigger screen, room with any lighting, or lower lumen output would fail the calculator's test.

Incidentally, if worse come to worse you could always split the video for two projectors and two screens. Not an ideal arrangement, but if you find yourself looking at pricy $6K 3.5K lumen projectors and $2K mega-screens, the economics may make you rethink the scope.

Regards, Michael
