portable monitor

I remember seeing a thread about monitor but I can't find it anymore. I'm looking for a relatively cheap 7"-10" portable to hookup to my rig. I just purchased a RedRock Micro shoulder mount and now that I "sort of" balanced my rig, my EX1's LCD is way back behind my ears so that means I need a separate monitor.

Any suggestion is appreciated or a link to that thread is fine too.

Thanks!

Okay, I just found this one on BH. It's within my price and weight range. Is the composite input good enough for monitoring EX1 videos?

Okay, I just found this one BH too. It has HDMI input. I wonder if my Sony EX1 has HDMI out though. The weight is a bit on the heavy side though.

Thanks! However, I thought I did see a component out from EX1, correct? Perhaps I can use the component instead then.

The latest version, the EX1R,adds HDMI output in addition to all the current options, including SDI. The EX1R also adds SD shooting/recording options.

I have used the composite output from my EX1 with a 7-inch consumer LCD monitor and it is OK for framing, casual focus and exposure viewing, but not for critical image evaluation.

In the next week or two I will be trying another small monitor with the computer-style 15-pin D connector ("VGA") to see if it will work with the component output from the EX1. The determining factor will be whether the monitor will operate properly with sync on Green because the camera doesn't output separate H and V sync like a computer does.

Thanks! Yes, I seen reviews about the EX1R.

I've found a thread about the Manhattan monitor. It looks to be within my price range. However, it's a bit on the heavy side. I need the monitor to be less than 1 lbs. It can be 4"-7". I now realized that 7-10" is quite heavy. I just want something to replace my Sony EX1 LCD monitor.

Yes, I saw that one too while I was searching but I have not seen any reviews yet on that model and brand.

According to the published specifications, it has great 1440 horizontal resolution, but pathetic 234 vertical resolution (25% the actual image resolution.) Nice set of accessories and great price, but the poor vertical resolution seems like a show-stopper to me. I would think that anything < 50% is a consumer toy.

Yea, it's amazing how often manufacturers pull the trick of counting each red, blue and green pixels separately to inflate their resolution count.

If you can save up a few more bucks, it's very much worth it to consider the Marshall 7" SDI broadcast monitor. It gives you the ability to utilize the SDI function of the EX1, gives you peaking, 1 to 1 pixel ratio, false color, and 4 assignable function buttons on the front to make your fav features easily selected. We've used this with DV cameras as well as DSLR's (Canon 5D Markii through the HDMI version) and the results have always been amazing.
Well worth your money if you can hold out for it!
