I'm looking for a good LCD monitor that I can use in my hands while directing shots, so portable and good battery life.
Sometime ago i saw a waveform/video monitor from techtronics, but a little expensive.
There is a company called "transvideo" that makes the best compact portable LCD's on the market. Downside is they are very expensive. They are what you see all the time mounted to film cameras and stuff. I have heard the Nebtek's that EVS carries are really good also. The plus with those is that you can get an adapter so that the monitor uses the same panasonic battery as your camera.
Oh - also, if you have a spare laptop you may consider DVRack as well from Serious Magic. It's a great all-in-one tool that includes monitor, record-to-disk, waveform monitors, etc. it's really fantastic. You just need a pretty decent laptop.
Test DVRack first with the trial. It's fine, but for me when I used it for the first time the other day the laptop or the long firewire cable generated a lot of noise, and interfered with our audio so I couldn't use it. I have to work out what was the cause - crappy firewire cable or what..
I regularly used a 50 ft firewire cable with no problems. I forget where I got it from, but it was recommended by the guys at serious magic, and the cable is obviously high quality. Only problem was the steadicam shots; the wire was a problem.
I tested DVrack it it is good, but manytimes the laptop is big enough to use in external productions. I want a LCD monitor to be light and easy to move with the camera when recording in diferent locations.
