Portable Hard Drive Capture

A while back I read something online about small portable HDs that could take firewire input directly from the camera and bypass the need for using tape in the field. The units were small and could be attached to the camera much the same as an audio box or wireless mic system.

Anyone know what these are called or who makes them? Has anyone worked with them before? It sounded like a great alternative to tape as well as streamlining the capture process.

Thanks in advance for any details.

And if you hava a power source on set you can also buy a notebook and DVRack software (enables recording on notebook's HD and right away watching recorded sequences)

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

Is DVRack Mac or PC?

Thanks for the other links. We want to do more corporate announcement work for streaming etc... the HD solutions would cut down the production cycle time and save wear on our tape heads.

PC. If you want more information:

It's not that expensive even and I must say that the possibility of checking your video constantly is worth those $500 (till the end of february $300). Plus when you record some interviews it's a lot easier to edit...

I didn't use HD so my knoleage is only teoretical but if it is as nice as they say i will have to invest in it someday...

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

Sorry I spend too much time in IT. I meant Hard Drive based solutions not HD format. I'm very happy with the DVX 24p for now. HD seems mostly painful from what I have read.

The laptop solution sounds nice. I wonder if there is a Mac solution too?

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

I meant HardDrive :) I'm using SD and I'm not investing in HD (it IS to painful) but in HardDrive maybe :) - for now DvRack is enough for me...

I'm studying computer science. My first guess was harddrive of course ;D
//i donno why it came out as highDefinition.... :)

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

I know what you mean. Too many of the same letter combinations for too many different technologies.

What kind of IT are you studying? Are you making films now too?

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

I'm on a first year now. And for the next 2 it will be mostly programming, but then starting in the third year I will choose 3d graphics/animation and hopfully finish it in 2010 :) . Films are rather my hobby.

So in my situation it looks like this: I learn IT. Use it to earn money (2d graphics). Money spend on films.

Vicious circle ;D

//How about you?

Re: Portable Hard Drive Capture

Doing mostly IT related consulting and project work now. Film is mostly a hobby and hope for the future now. I am working with a partner to start a small digital media company in Tokyo. We hope to mix our web, IT, digital media (film, audio etc..) translation and project management skills into something that can be a stable little company some day. Little by little we hope.
