portable field recorder

Anyone have any recommendation on a good, afordable digital audio recorder for use in the field? I see the pros sporting them: headphones on their heads, fish pole in hand and some sort of recording unit hanging at their sides but haven't a clue what they're using.

Much Grass!

Re: portable field recorder

You have several options available to you, depending on your budget. The best investment you could make will be the sound devices 722 for a non-timecode machine, and 744t for a timecode machine. They will be released very soon (within the next week). If you have a larger budget (we're talking 10 grand or more here) then you could check out the Deva IV, or HHB Portadrive.

Re: portable field recorder

This is what I use: Laptop computer running Sound Forge, connected to a M-Audio Firewire 410 mic preamp for mobile use. If I'm going to have access to a power outlet I'll use a MOTU 828MkII Firewire interface instead of the M-audio for a better quality pre-amp. It's not the most convienent setup, but I can get very clean 16bit 48khz audio and the investment wasn't $2500 - $10000 as good standalone units can be. Plus the MOTU also serves as a high end sound card audio interface for my editing workstation. 2 birds, 1 stone.

Re: portable field recorder

did you try this on the shoulder -tall the laptop based setups are good for indor studio use , in real film world-thats not enoth

Re: portable field recorder

Oleg's right. I've tried to use a laptop for portable field recording, and it's just unworkable. It takes too long to boot up a computer, it's not all that portable, and completely unreliable. You have to have a place to set up a computer, and when your out in the desert, running around recording stuff, it just doesn't work. You need something that goes over your shoulder, and can run with you.

Re: portable field recorder

I took a look at Sound Devices 722 and 744t.  That's absolutely what I was looking for.  From what I gathered it has redundant backup capability (hard disk and flash card).  Nothing better than a little security when on a shoot.  It's a bit pricey even at lower-end of its type but seems well worth it if you're serious.  And of course we're all serious.  I guess it's time to sell another one of my kids.

Re: portable field recorder

There is the Marantz PMD670 Professional Solid State Recorder series.

You can look at it at B&H. Type "PMD670" in the search box.

The cost goes from $800 -> $1200 depending if you want a harddrive. You need to add at that price $234 for the Reporter Carrying Case and $250 for the battery and charger.

I was looking at it (the k2 one) a while ago. But I have no clues how good it is.

Maybe some pro sound guy from the forum has some infos.

"The unit is ordered directly from the factory as a B stock, which means it could of been used as a demo piece for tradeshows or as a display unit or rep demo, or sometimes is a refurb. It comes with a full manufacturers warranty with all of its packaging as if new. We welcome any questions that you might have, this item is in extreme limited quantity so please act fast."

I'm not too sure if I like that...

Re: portable field recorder

It still comes with a warranty which is better than you'd get if you got it second hand. I just checked on BH Photo though. You can get the same unit for $1300. Not bad considering all the features. Anyone ever use one of these?

Re: portable field recorder

Spend your money on a sound devices 722 or Marantz PMD670. The FR-2 is not that great. Plus, fostex is getting into the habit of discontinuing products and not supporting them. Just ask PD-2 and PD-4 owners who are really pissed off right now. They just discontinued the PD-4, and they won't service them anymore.
