portable dimmers

Can anyone recommend an affordable way to add dimmers to individual lights. My primary light source is 500w and my fill light is also 500W.

Here is one of my home built ones.

They're built like tanks. You can throw them around and the only thing that can break is the dimmer knob if you were very mean to them:)

If you build your own you need to pay close attention to the components to make sure they will handle the watts you need.

These are rated for 600w so realistically, you wouldn't want to plug-in more than one light unless both lights totaled 600 watts or less.

You could build the same thing with a single box with a rheostat and a cord on either end rather than the way I did it and it would possibly be cheaper. I'd hate to cannibalize a nice thick extension cord just to use the ends though.

Just make sure you use a rheostat and a cord that are both appropriately rated for the required load.

A built-in fuse wouldn't be a bad idea either;)

thanks

I built one tonight with a 1000W dimmer purchased from lowes 48 dollars. It works great and I've had it runnning to a 500W bulb for half an hour and I still hear no noise. Thanks much for all your responses!!!!

3000W multi channel dimmer

3000W multi channel dimmer

With the success that I had with the single channel dimmer I went out bought two more and set them into an electric box then sealed it all together with wood. What you're looking at is a three channel 3000W dimmer, each channel is 1000W. I've been running it to a LOWEL lighting set and it works great without any sound or problems so far. It cost me about 150 dollars in supplies to make.

good job, fellas.

Note to some ppl that wonder about the DIY, these are only for halogen or other incandescent bulbs. Don't use these on fluorescent bulbs. For non-compact fluorescent, there are dimmable ballast out there.
