Pop-up Videos Graphics?

Any thoughts on creating the graphics used in VH1's Pop-Up Videos show? I'm guessing I would:

1. Create the base art in Illustrator
2. Import the art into AE (or Combustion) along with the video
3. Use keyframes and maybe some motion tracking to animate each graphic along the timeline.

Or, is this harder than it sounds?

Re: Pop-up Videos Graphics?

you're on the right path. I had to do a sh-tload of trial and error before getting my pop-ups to resemble those on VH1. I'll have to look back on my notes to see what I did, as the last time I did them was 2 years ago.
I made the captions in Photoshop(or Illustrator will work as well), and imported them into FCP(didnt have to go to AE). If anything, you might want to have a recording of an episode to study over and over(preferably when there is no music playing to sample the pop-up sound as well). If I remember correctly, I think VH1 pop-ups are 7 frames long.

Re: Pop-up Videos Graphics?

I did this for an old high-school reunion video, with student and teacher names "popping-up" when you'd first see them.

I did it all in AE, using illustrator artwork.

Drop your vid into a comp, then add your "pop-up" art to a layer above. Set the AI file's anchor point to dead center of the actual "pop up" graphic, then align the graphic to the bottom just inside your RGB safe zone. Then you'll need 3 keyframes on it's scale property layer . The first is set to 0%, then about 5 frames later set to like 120%, then 2 or 3 frames later set it back to 100%, this will give the artwork a "bounce", or a "pop" as it comes into view, reverse these keyframes when its time to remove the gfx.

Do a search on Google for the Pop sound... look for "pop.wav" etc then drop this in above each of your AI layers.

Bingo, Pop-up video!
