Poor render times?

Recently I rendered a 1 hour video that I had made some edits to etc...

Render time was about 9.5 hours. This seemed kind of odd.

The current system is an Athlon XP 3000+ w/ 1GB of ram and a GeForce 6800GT.

Question one - Is that a normal render time?

Two - Are the system specs adequate?

If they aren't we are going to put in a request to get a better machine.

New 3Ghz P4 w/ 1.5 gb of ram and SATA?

Otherwise, we might just push for a dual processor G5... although with Mac making the switch to Intel soon... and I'm quite fond of Vegas.

It depends on what you're rendering and what settings you've used.

If you used Magic Bullet, or piled on a bunch of your own effects, the render time is going to be looooooong.

Also, the higher the quality settings for the render, the longer it will take. Render settings like CBR, VBR, or 2-pass will affect the render times variously, too.

I didn't do to much, just some simple crossfades etc... although throughout most of the video I did use a picture in picture type effect.

(I'm creating instructional materials)

I'm just trying to determine if it is worth upgrading to a new system, and trying to justify it to our IT people.

You’ve got two things working against you there:

Multiple layers.

Resizing video.

LOTS of number-crunching going on.
