Poor QuickTime Playback on Powerful Computer

I have a dual core, 4GB computer with an nVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card. I get flawless Avid performance, even with 6 or 7 layers of DNxHD 220X. After Effects works very smoothly too. But strangely, something as simple as playing back anything bigger than an DVD MPEG file in my QuickTime Pro is stuttery and the picture lags behind the audio. I have to press pause and play again so the picture can catch up to the audio. Why on earth would I be getting such slow QT playback on bigger files? Anything I can do to speed things up?

maybe the codec that you are trying to play, try that or maybe its your version of quicktime which I doubt, I have gotten similar results when playing back a weird codec

Hm. I use many codecs on this computer. Always the same response. And then on my small laptop with half the RAM and some no-name onboard graphics card plays it just fine.

Apple designs quicktime for the PC very poorly. Quicktime's internal decoders have poor performance. DV will usually appear blocky, JPEG2000 is always very slow at decoding, h.264 wont run full speed unless its under 720P usually.

Its all their way to make you get a Mac. Good thing Quicktime isn't the online delivery standard.

Ah. Well that explains a lot. These movies are over 720p. And I still ain't buying a Mac. :-)

Thanks for the info.

sooner or later you'll probably be working with avchd, or something similar, and it'll be very helpful if you have a video player like nero showtime... or perhaps the vlc media player with the coreavc codec added to it.

both of those media players have some type of acceleration that aids playback of certain codecs... it can make a big difference for stuff like h.264.
