poor man's fake driving rain?

huh, guess what?
we had a 1 minute shower tonight, after a month of 'summer',
that by a stroke of crazy luck i managed to capture WITH the talent driving!
a good 30 seconds money shot :)
all done.

Love when the weather conspires to actually help you now and again.

I can't wait for an excuse to do the poor mans rain technique. That footage from an uncompleted film Welles shot (in the F is for Fake extras) is amazing, and he did it all in his driveway with a hose and moving lights around in the background!

I've got all kinds of shots from in the vehicle at various angles, but a lot of the source material is over at our production facility. This is just some stuff I had kicking around.

We had cars and all kinds of things go by including light standards etc. which accentuated the "rain?" as they helped occassionally backlight the rain.

When you used the hoses, how did you actually get water to them? Were they coming off of houses? Or did you use barrels of water with water pumps?

We shot the rain sequence at three separate locations on three different days and edited everything together to make it appear seamless. For the inside the truck scene you posted here we had a PA on a step ladder with a garden hose. As in turn on the tap sticking out of the house and press the lever on the hose while the truck sat in the director's driveway at home. Other PAs went by the truck at a distance to look like cars and lights going by distant and close.

The next two grabs show what was done with a pump and hose from a water truck we borrowed that had a pump. We pointed the hose in the air and let the water come down on the leaves of branches hanging over the road to make it look like a downpour.

For the frame grab below with fire we shot it in someone's back yard and had two PAs that time with garden hoses shooting up in the air and arcing down to fake rain.

I'm not even sure one of those would have actually worked better for us or not. As it was, we had use of the water truck for only part of an evening between 6 and 8 pm. Everything was kind of thought up over a coffee when we found out someone who wanted to help out was able to loan us the water truck and make it available for a few hours at the end of their regular shift and we just went along with the flow (no pun intended). The scene it was for was the opening teaser for the tv pilot we were doing. While tv pilot might sound all fancy, the writer/director/executive producer of this project was funding things on his own nickel as it was a spec pilot. The whole project was shot evenings and weekends a year ago June so actors and others with regular day jobs would not be inconvenienced.

Here is a youtube of that opening teaser:

I was thinking it'd be possible to fake the driving like dj said. Have someone infront(or behind)the car push it up and down from the sides to simulate going over bumps in the street. That like others said have actors carrying flash lights taped on a broom walk by or walk off infront of the car with red flash lights

Should work imo

Just move up to Vancouver, we can't get it to stop raining here! Otherwise, I completely agree with saharaturtle, I've done it before and it can look quite convincing, get some tungsten flashlights as well as some red to look like passing taillights
