Poor Dissolve quality in FCP... HELP!

Hey guys. Im having a huge problem with the short film i shot in standard 24p on the 100a. im editing a montage sequence on FCP HD and there are a number of fades up from black, and fades out to black. the fade outs look fine, but on the dissolve up the footage looks horrible.

There seems to be a ridiculous amount of artifacting, and im aware of the limitations of DV and its less than desirable representation of gradiations in color, but what is even worse is that there seems to be this terrible color flicker thru out the dissolve. the color shifts a number of times. at first i thought it might be a problem with the CC work we did, but even the raw footage viewed with a stock fade up shifts in color too. (almost like it was keyframed to change color every couple frames or so).

even compressed DV footage shouldnt look this terrible. i dont know if it is something wrong with my settings, or what. ive never seen this happen before on any other of my projects. if anyone has any insight on this problem or any advice on how to get nice clean, NON-blotchy fade ups, id be very grateful.

thanks guys,

Daniel

There are a few 'film-dissolves' out there. Check out www.nattress.com for one. I believe those are based on a chroma change rather than a one for one opacity change.

That said -- you might want to try creating one with your color corrector. Keyframe a chroma up and then save it in your favorites. I've never done ANYTHING like this and I'm not even sure it works.

Oh -- there are some free ones out there too... I'll post back later when I get home.

Daniel--

Could you describe in more detail what the artifacting looks like? Just trying to see if it's a result of the dissolve, the pulldown or the footage itself.

The FCP filters and transitions pretty much blow, and I'd strongly recommend looking into a Boris plugin package (if you have the $$$) or something like Eureka plug-ins (if you don't have the $$$$--it's only fifty bucks & has a really nice film dissolve as well as a bunch of other film and text filters and transitions).
